Gus arrived at Ape Action Africa in June 2024 at just three months old, confiscated by authorities in Djoum in the South Region of Cameroon. Dehydrated and underfed on arrival, he has since grown into a gentle, confident young chimpanzee who is inseparable from his two companions, Ahmed and Caesar.

Barbie arrived at Ape Action Africa in August 2024, confiscated by wildlife authorities in Lomie, Cameroon. Shot and with a bullet fragment lodged in her skull from the same weapon that had killed her mother, she arrived terrified and in critical condition. Following surgery and months of dedicated care, she is now eating well, playing, and growing more confident every day under the watch of Luci, a female gorilla who has taken her on as her own.

Nouji arrived at Ape Action Africa in July 2022 at just six months old, confiscated from a poacher in Cameroon with a pellet in her foot from the attack that killed her mother. Now four years old, she has grown into one of the most energetic and outgoing young gorillas at the sanctuary, earning the nickname Non-Stop Nouji from her caregiver, Mr Alfred.

Samburu was born at Ape Action Africa in 2007 and has lived here his entire life. As an infant he contracted meningitis, losing his sight and mobility almost overnight. Against all odds he recovered, and at 19 years old he has spent the decades since raising generation after generation of young chimpanzees at the sanctuary.

Bobo arrived at Ape Action Africa in 1999 at just two years old, rescued after witnessing the slaughter of his family and being kept chained in isolation. Over 25 years later, he has grown into one of the most respected silverbacks at the sanctuary, a calm and fair leader who has helped raise a generation of gorillas around him.

Shot by hunters in the East Province of Cameroon as a baby in 2006, Shufai arrived at Ape Action Africa in deep shock, terrified of humans and with pellets lodged in his arm, a wounded temple and a piece of his right ear missing. Now the alpha male of his group, he patrols his enclosure with quiet authority and enjoys peaceful forest life alongside all the females in his care.

Nona was found in a hunting camp in the east of Cameroon in December 2004, just two weeks old, her mother killed and her wounds left untreated. She arrived at Ape Action Africa barely breathing. Against the odds she survived, and at around 22 years old she is now one of the most established members of her gorilla group, known at the sanctuary for her calm, peacekeeping nature.

Chris arrived at Ape Action Africa in August 2013 at just four months old, after his mother dropped him while fleeing a farm near Nanga Eboko. Named after Rachel’s father, he is now around 13 years old and a growing, characterful young gorilla at the sanctuary.

In 2006, a young gorilla named Shufai arrived at Ape Action Africa with gunshot wounds to his head and arm, his mother killed by hunters. Years of chronic pain followed, leading to the decision to amputate his left arm in 2013. Today, Shufai is the silverback of his own gorilla troop. His life did not follow the path it should have, but it did not end in 2006.
