A New X-Ray Machine for Our Veterinary Clinic

When one of our residents needs a health check or has suffered an injury, our veterinary team needs to act quickly and accurately. Until now, getting X-ray imaging done has meant sending primates off site or working without the visual information that can make all the difference. That changes today.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Honorary President, Eran Moas, Ape Action Africa now has a brand new X-ray machine in our veterinary clinic.
Why this matters
For a sanctuary caring for almost 300 primates, having X-ray capability on site is a game changer. Our vet team use X-ray imaging as part of routine health checks to make sure everything is as it should be internally, as well as for assessing fractures, foreign objects, internal injuries and bone assessments during procedures. Previously our team had to make decisions based on what they could observe externally, or go through the lengthy and stressful process of transporting a primate off site for imaging.
Now they can do it here. Quickly, safely, and without putting any additional stress on the resident.
Kibu
The first image in this post shows Kibu, one of our silverback gorillas, undergoing a routine health check including an X-ray to make sure everything was in good order. Routine imaging like this allows our team to stay on top of the health of our residents proactively, rather than waiting for a problem to present itself.

Njoya
The second image tells a different story. Njoya is one of our male mandrills who suffered a fracture to his arm and required reinforced steel plates to stabilise the injury. The X-ray you can see here shows those plates clearly in place. Without on-site imaging, assessing an injury like this and monitoring the recovery would have been significantly more difficult.
Together, Kibu and Njoya show exactly why this machine matters. Routine care and emergency response, both made better by having the right equipment in the right place.
““Having this machine on site gives us a level of precision we simply did not have before. It means better assessments, faster decisions, and ultimately better outcomes for our residents.””
A continued commitment
This is not the first time Eran has gone above and beyond for Ape Action Africa. His ongoing support of our sanctuary and the primates in our care has made a real and lasting difference.
Thank you, Eran. From our entire team, and from every primate in our care. 💚
