From Old Veterinary Clinic to Senior Caregiver Accommodation
As the sanctuary grows, we adapt.
At Ape Action Africa in Cameroon, the building that once served as our veterinary clinic has now been renovated and converted into accommodation for our senior caregivers. It is a practical change, and an important one.
Years ago, this space was where injured and newly rescued primates received urgent medical care. As our veterinary capacity expanded, we built a newer clinic designed to handle more complex cases and a growing number of rescues. The original building was no longer needed for treatment, but it was still solid and structurally sound.
Rather than leave it unused, we renovated it.
The former clinic has now been converted into on site accommodation for senior caregivers who provide daily care to rescued chimpanzees, gorillas, and monkeys at the sanctuary. The renovation focused on making the space safe, practical, and suitable for long term residential use.
Our caregivers are responsible for monitoring health, behavior, feeding routines, and group stability across multiple enclosures. Their days start early and often run long. Having appropriate accommodation on site strengthens continuity of care and allows experienced staff to remain close to the primates they are responsible for.
At a wildlife rescue sanctuary like ours, consistency matters. The more stable the team, the more stable the care.
Repurposing the old veterinary clinic also reflects how our infrastructure continues to evolve. Rescue numbers change. Care standards improve. Buildings must adapt alongside the work.
While new enclosures and nursery spaces often draw the spotlight, staff accommodation is just as important. Without experienced caregivers, rescue and rehabilitation cannot function.
This renovation strengthens our long term operations and supports the people who are here every day, caring for rescued primates in Cameroon.
Sanctuary development is not only about spaces for primates. It is also about creating the conditions that allow the people who protect them to keep doing their work properly.
