Samburu Meet the Alphas – Samburu Twelve-year-old Samburu has faced a lot of difficulties, but he is now ‘Le Roi’ (The King) of our pre-nursery chimpanzee group. Samburu was born a healthy baby, but at the age of one and a half, he contracted meningitis, which left him blind, deaf and paralysed. With intensive care and rehabilitation, Samburu regained most of his function and amazed us with the extent of his recovery. However, he was left with some permanent physical and neurological damage. He was initially integrated into a young chimpanzee group, but as the other chimps grew older and stronger, he was unable to defend himself and began to suffer from a lot of stress. He was then moved to our pre-nursery group where he continues to live a much more peaceful life with the infant chimps, providing them with useful experience of adult interaction. Samburu still suffers from fits and will require daily medication for the rest of his life. If you would like to help us to provide care for our primates, please visit our donations page. Just £6 will pay for Samburu’s medication for a month.
